UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), which is governed by its 194 member States, is the United Nations body responsible for dealing with development issues, particularly international trade – the main driver of development.
Design the cover and layout of a much anticipated publication for the world wide UNCTAD network to use in their implementation of the Policy Guide on Youth Entrepreneurship.
Being a youth-related publication, our approach was to immediately break from the usual “corporate” design of UN (United Nations) documents – while still keeping the content design professional and easy-to-follow. As such, we took a youthful approach to cover concepts, colour palette and visual language.
Our starting point was to crack the concept of the cover. Along with client we settled on the concept “Cracking Open Youth Potential”. This concept looked at entrepreneurship as a journey where you unpack the layers of yourself and so we used a type of layered candy/sweet which represented youth and the concept. The layers represented the journey while the jaggedness of the candy represented the ups and downs of the entrepreneurship journey. The colours of the candy/sweet informed the colours used in the publication lending a youthful exuberance.
